Now the good news - Microsoft today separately released a free add-on for Office 2007 that will allow users to export their Word documents or Excel Spreadsheets as PDF files without requiring a third-party PDF printing driver.
The Save as PDF addin lets user export and save to the PDF format in all Microsoft Office programs. It also allows user to send files as e-mail attachments in the PDF format.
The plugins are compatible with all Microsoft Office 2007 programs including Access, Excel, Infopath, Word, Visio, Publisher, Powerpoint and OneNote.

I get the whole handheld computer and ultramobile device space, from the Samsung Nexio of old to the Nokia N810 to todays Samsung Mondi. I dont believe these devices are the answer to a problem nobody had. There are indeed folks who need lightweight mobile computing in their pocket: in the physical sense and in the OS sense. The Mondi is larger than a smartphone but only an ounce or so heavier. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Classic so its instant-on, unlike netbooks. The 4.3" screen is much better suited to web browsing, document viewing and video playback than small-screened phones. The large hardware keyboard makes email and remote access easier. But heres the dilemma: smartphones have gotten larger and more powerful and now they too can handle the jobs done by MIDs (Mobile Internet Device) and make phone calls too (the Mondi doesnt have a cell radio). Samsung knows this too, and so the Mondi has a trump card: WiMAX 4G for faster wide area networking.
Why WiMAX?
Alas, Samsung makes the device but not the network so theyre counting on the likes of Clear (Clearwire) and soon Time Warner and Sprint to make that network hum. It aint there yet, and were not sure it will ever be compelling now that HSDPA 7.2Mbps is hitting metro areas with HSPA + (21Mbps) coming in 2010 on T-Mobile and LTE looming for Verizon and AT&T. When WiMAX was first touted more than 3 years ago the speeds sounded impressive to a world plodding along on EDGE and EV-DO Rev. 0, but now its nothing special. Clears service is currently available in Portland and Salem Oregon, Boise, Las Vegas, several Texas cities including Dallas, Atlanta, the Seattle metro area, Greensboro, Charlotte, Raleigh, Philadelphia, Honolulu and Maui. Though Clear offers home (indoor) and mobile coverage packages, we havent gotten a decent signal indoors yet in the Dallas and Portland coverage areas. WiMAX requires significant base station density (more dense than cell networks) and at 2.5GHz its high enough in the spectrum to have trouble with building penetration. Outdoors in a car or at a sidewalk cafe we had no problem getting a 50% signal, but in a house we managed maybe 1 bar with service drops if we wandered too far from a window. Forget hanging out in a large corporate building or big box store unless theres a WiMAX repeater. We hope things will improve, but its going to take time and money to build out a strong WiMAX network.
Clear has quite a few service plans (and enough overlapping ones to be confusing) but there is a specific Mondi unlimited plan thats currently $35/month for the first 6 months and $45 for the remaining 1.5 years. Download speeds arent limited as they are on some of Clears other plans (current max download speeds are approximately 6Mbps (which is slower than WiFi 802.11bs 10 Mbps) and 1 Mbps upload speeds. There is no data cap on this plan. The bad news? Theyre doing things cell phone style and Clear requires a 2 year contract to get these rates. Month to month rates are higher. Clearly at this point, youre paying a fairly expensive monthly fee for broadband wireless thats not available in many metro areas, nor is it blisteringly fast.
Enough about WiMAX, lets take a look at the Mondi itself. The device looks and feels well-made though we wouldnt call it chic and stylish. Its solid, the QWERTY slider is robust and the keyboard is quite good. It certainly feels worth the $449 price, which is comparable to a touch screen smartphone price without contract extension. The Mondi reminds us of a larger Motorola Droid, with its black rectangular business looks and slide-out QWERTY. The Mondis keyboard is much better than the Droids: its larger and the keys have more travel and tactile feedback. The devices have similar display resolutions but the Mondis LCD is larger at 4.3", making text easier to read without zooming in. This is a resistive display rather than a capacitive display like that of the Droid and iPhone. That means youll need to press harder and theres no multi-touch pinch zooming. The good news is that you can use a stylus (Windows Mobile 6.1 is easier to use with a stylus since its not touch-optimized) or your fingernail to tap on small links and close boxes.
The Mondi has stereo speakers on the top edge that sound reasonably good for a mobile device, a mic, a 3.5mm stereo headset jack (handy not just for music but also VoIP calls), a dedicated camera button and an easily accessible microSD card slot under a plastic door. The Samsung has a micro USB port for syncing and charging and like any Windows Mobile device it can sync over USB to Outlook and wirelessly to MS Exchange servers. A pop-out arm functions as a stand so you can watch videos with the Mondi on a desk or tray table (the Mondi supports a wide variety of video formats including Flash 8) and there are volume controls on the right side.
Though the Mondi is larger than todays bigger smartphones, its clearly much smaller than a netbook and is pocketable if you have roomy pockets in loose-fitting garments. At 5.39 ounces, it weighs less than youd expect of a device this size.
The Mondi is not a phone and it doesnt have a cell radio. That means no voice calls unless you use VoIP services like Skype. We tested the Mondi with Skype over both WiMAX and WiFi and it worked fine, even when using the built in speakers and mic (your caller will hear their voice echo back if you dont use the headset though). To use Skype on Windows Mobile youll need to download and install the application. Each time you wish to use Skype youll need to run the app and sign in-- theres no turnkey integration with the phone app as there is on the Nokia N900 since there is no phone app on the Mondi (once again, this isnt a phone).

Performance and Horsepower
The Mondi uses Samsungs own ARM11 family S3C6410 CPU running at 800MHz. Thats a lot of high-end processing power and the Mondi makes good use of it when playing back fairly high resolution video in MPEG4, DivX and other formats. We were surprised that the device sometimes lagged in Samsungs custom home screen, whose UI is attractive, finger-friendly and intuitive but not so full of eye candy that it should drag on performance (see our video news to check out the home screen UI). TouchWiz, Samsungs UI for touch screen phones is also on board and we have to wonder why: it really doesnt add to the experience and really slows down the device (fortunately, you need not run it).
After using the HTC HD2 with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, and noting how that CPU helped speed Opera rendering times (making its EDGE connection feel much faster) were surprised that neither the 800MHz Mondi nor Samsung Omnia II show much speed improvement in Opera Mobile 9.5. Opera runs about as quickly as on the average 528MHz Qualcomm CPU-- decent but not seriously fast. Samsung customized the Mondi and Opera to support Flash 8 content in the browser (no need for an external player). YouTube uses Flash 8 but Hulu uses Flash 9, so that means YouTube but no Hulu for you. Even over a fast WiFi connection, YouTube standard resolution video played jerkily at about 12 frames per second-- not ideal, but maybe better than nothing. Opera supports a max of 3 windows and oddly it wont let you run Opera and Internet Explorer Mobile concurrently though the OS and device otherwise support multi-tasking.
The mobile equivalent of Windows programs that are standard on Windows Mobile are on board. Office Mobile and Outlook run quickly enough, and the high resolution screen makes reading and editing MS Office documents a pleasure. As a mobile office, the Mondi does the job. For those of you who are still very new to mobile computing, Windows Mobile runs mobile versions of Microsoft applications that have many but not all features of the desktop versions. You cant install programs meant for true Windows PCs and notebooks on a Windows Mobile device. You can download and install additional programs made for the WinMo platform, but youll need to do that minus the Windows Mobile Marketplace which currently only supports Windows Mobile 6.5 (the Mondi runs 6.1 and theres no word of an upgrade).
The Mondi has 4 gigs of internal flash storage (nice) and an SDHC microSD card slot so you can carry plenty of business documents, maps and multimedia content on the device. It has 256 megs of RAM with 81 megs free at boot, which should be enough memory to keep the device running smoothly. We did notice instability when heavyweight applications were running. For example, we switched out of Route 66 navigation to turn on the WiMAX connection so we could look up POIs and the Mondi slowed to a crawl and had difficulty drawing the home screen background and Start Menu icon.
Camera and GPS
First: the good news. Samsung includes all the hardware you need to use the Mondi as an in-car GPS system: windshield mount and car charger. In fact, these items are handy if you work in a vertical market and need access to your device for any reason while in the car. The Mondi ships with Route 66 navigation software with maps of the US and Canada. Route 66 is more popular in Europe than the US but it nonetheless gives good turn-by-turn directions and has sharp maps. The bad news? The Mondis GPS seems weak and we had difficulty getting a satellite fix. Indoors there was little hope but outdoors we could get a position fix. Tall buildings and heavy tree cover caused problems for the Mondi on the road but with clear skies it managed to keep up with our location.
The 3 megapixel main (rear) camera has an autofocus lens and it takes reasonably good shots for a camera of that resolution. The camera has face detection, smile detection and panorama mode as well as geotagging. It can shoot decent quality video with audio at VGA 640 x 480 and QVGA 320 x 240 resolutions at approximately 25 fps. The front-facing VGA webcam is for video conferencing though we couldnt find an application to make use of it.
Conclusion
The Samsung Mondi is a powerful handheld, but it feels a bit behind the times now that PDAs have been eclipsed by powerful smartphones that are smaller and equally as capable. The Mondi is the first 4G handheld and that should give it a leg up: it might not have a cell radio but its capable of fast data connections. Unfortunately, the Mondi is a bit ahead of its time in that respect since WiMAX 4G is currently available in very few metro areas and the download speeds and connection reliability suffer due to poor building penetration. But if you want a very large-screen Windows Mobile handheld to be your mobile office, the Mondi fits the bill and adds a good QWERTY keyboard too. It has WiFi for local area connections when WiMAX isnt available, but if you want Internet anywhere and not just at WiFi hotspots, check the WiMAX coverage maps carefully before taking the plunge.

Since it is not meant for compiler writers, it left lot of ambiguity in its interpretation and many of the constructs were not clear. One such example is the list of library functions. Nothing significant is said about the header files in the [Kernighan and Ritchie 1978] and so each implementation had their own set of library functions. The compiler vendors had different interpretations and added more features (language extensions) of their own. This created many inconsistencies between the programs written for various compilers and lot of portability and efficiency problems cropped up.
To overcome the problem of inconsistency and standardize the available language features ANSI formed a committee called X3J11. Talking about the code, it is pretty straightforward, we are taking the current time, type casting it to an integer in a variable $t (type casting is also done in the similar manner in C++). Then we are printing different messages according to what the current time is.
That being clear, let’s us look at the working of date() function a bit. We’ve previously used date function in the post Writing and Running PHP Scripts. As I explained, it takes a string as an argument through which we can tell the function to return the date/time in the format we want.
Previously, we used date function with the format string "h:i A, jS F Y" and in this post we are using “G”. Actually each character in the string we send as an argument represent one part of date/time. PHP’s date function understands more that 30 different characters which can be used to get the time in the required format.
Taking the example of the format string "h:i A, jS F Y". we have h,:,I,A,j,S,F,Y characters in it which means the following:
h-Hour of the day in 12-hour format with leading zeros. Range: 01 to 12.
i-Minutes past, with leading zeros. Range: 00 to 59.
A-Morning or afternoon, in UPPER case letters. Maybe AM or PM.
j-Day of the month without leading zeros. Range: 1 to 31.
S-Ordinal suffix for the current date. May be st, nd, rd, th.
F-Month of the year in full text format. Range: January to December.
Y-Year in 4-digit format.

In the code at the top of this post, we sent the format string “G” to the date function which returns the hour of the day in 24-hour format without leading zeros. Since date() function returns a string we type casted it to and integer before storing it in $t, which would ease arithmetic calculations.

It goes without saying that its a good thing World War III didnt erupt between the United States and the now-defunct Soviet Union. For many of us who were children during the Cold War, the fear of being annihilated in a nuclear conflict was very real. So its a bit strange now that we can look back at that era and have the luxury of imagining what could have been. Or we can play World in Conflict, Sierra and Massive Entertainments incredible new real-time strategy game. This isnt your standard RTS game, as World in Conflict doesnt follow the familiar model of resource gathering, base building, and swarming armies. Instead, it feels almost like an action game masquerading as a strategy game, and it offers up a relentlessly fun and amazing new approach to the genre, one that works in single-player and even more so in multiplayer.
World in Conflict is set in an alternate-history version of 1989. Instead of the Berlin Wall falling and communism collapsing, the Soviet Union launches an assault on Western Europe, and the United States rushes its forces in to aid its Western allies. Four months into the conflict, after the US Navy has been attrited down, the USSR launches a surprise invasion in Seattle and pushes inland. In the 14-mission single-player campaign, you play as a company commander who is part of the meager US defense; there is no campaign from the Soviet perspective, though you can play as the Red Army in multiplayer. However, the campaign twists and weaves, letting you experience a sample of the European conflict, battle in remote areas of the Soviet Union, and bring the fight to New York City.
Yes, the story is a bit far-fetched, but World in Conflict does a great job of making the implausible seem believable. Thats partly due to the excellent storytelling, which is spearheaded by pitch-perfect narrator Alec Baldwin. Hes backed up by a great voice acting cast that brings the principle and secondary characters to life, along with a story that offers up emotional and sometimes humorous vignettes from a world at war. For instance, youll hear a soldiers futile battle against Army bureaucracy, the phone conversation of a husband and wife, and the deliberations of the president and his top military advisors. While theres a small misstep or two, such as a gospel song in the weirdest of places, the game effectively tugs at your heartstrings, which is rare for a strategy game, especially when it concerns the fate of one character whom you presume to be entirely one-dimensional but isnt. Some of these vignettes are conveyed through in-game cutscenes, while others are delivered through graphic-novel-style drawings. World in Conflict also features some incredible prerendered cutscenes that are so good you actually wish there were more of them.
This isnt a hardcore wargame or simulation. There are far too many gameplay abstractions for that, from being able to air-drop reinforcements on the battlefield within seconds to repairing equipment almost instantly. Instead, World in Conflict is thrilling game about destruction. You get to unleash all the firepower of modern military units on an open battlefield, but you also get to experience the challenges of combined arms warfare. Thats because the game has a great rock-paper-scissors combat system that captures the vicious circle of war. Tanks can kill tanks and other vehicles well, but arent so good against infantry. Artillery can kill infantry easily, but arent so good against tanks. Helicopters can knock out vehicles well, but are vulnerable to infantry and antiaircraft units. Its a constant chess match about what you need to bring to battle and how you use it. The game is also smart enough to limit the number of units you can control. Instead of commanding the entire battlefield, youll have only a relative handful of units. This makes managing your units a lot easier, like when employing their secondary abilities such as popping smoke grenades to create cover when under attack.
Then theres the games excellent resource system. Youre given a pool of reinforcement points that you can use to purchase units. Naturally, the powerful units cost a lot more than weaker ones, so youve got to choose quantity over quality. But it goes a bit deeper than that, as different classes of units have different abilities. For instance, light helicopters are some of the best scouts in the game, able to locate enemies from a distance, but theyre extremely vulnerable. Medium helicopters are able to shoot down other helicopters with their air-to-air missiles, but they dont do a lot of damage to armor. Heavy helicopters can eat tanks for breakfast, but arent effective against other helicopters. So while your initial inclination might be to load up on heavy choppers and go after enemy armor, a wise player recognizes that there are many roles to play on the battlefield. If your units are destroyed, their cost is slowly refunded back into your reinforcement pool, so you can order up replacements, although veteran units are more effective, giving you an incentive to keep your experienced units alive as long as possible.
The nice thing about this system is that it effectively gives you an unlimited number or resources and units to work with, so its fairly forgiving to nontraditional strategy gamers. If that seems a bit easy, dont worry, because World in Conflict can also ratchet up the pressure by tossing in time limits. For instance, you might have to seize a town in less than 45 minutes, or achieve another objective in far less time. The margins for error are much smaller when youre working under a deadline.
Aside from reinforcement points, the only other resource in the game is tactical aid points, which are accumulated whenever you perform a vital role on the battlefield. You earn points by killing the enemy, but you also earn points by seizing and fortifying objectives, repairing friendly vehicles, transporting infantry around the battlefield, and so on. Tactical aid is like the icing on the cake, because you can use these points to purchase all sorts of powerful and utterly cool things. You can call in air strikes, napalm strikes, cluster bombers, mortar barrages, artillery barrages, chemical warfare, airborne reinforcements, precision artillery, fighter cover, and much more. The ultimate tactical aid is also the most awesome one: tactical nuclear weapons. World in Conflict features the best-looking mushroom clouds in gaming, and when they go off the screen flashes white and you hear the high-pitched sound of electronics frying. Its essentially the chilling sound of death.
All of this takes place on large, dynamic battlefields that come alive with the symphony of destruction. Thankfully, theres barely any worry about collateral damage in the game, so if you have to destroy a city to save it, then dont worry about the insurance bill. The destruction isnt just cosmetic, either. There can be all sorts of tactical implications. Take out a bridge and you force the enemy to go the long way around, or, in a multiplayer game, to call in a tactical aid to erect a new one. If the enemy is hiding infantry in woods and buildings, making them hard to root out, call in napalm and just burn down the trees or use artillery or smart bombs to blow up the structures. Everything blows up so beautifully that theres no such thing as overkill anymore. The game looks spectacular in DirectX 9, and its noticeably better in DirectX 10 thanks to more atmospheric lighting. If you only have a DX9 card, though, dont worry--you arent missing out on any gameplay enhancements aside from the ability to use dual-monitor support in multiplayer games.
Pretty much everything in the game looks good, even up close. Move the camera low to the ground and you can make out all the gear on your individual soldiers. Pull the camera back and you can soak in vast landscapes. One thing the game does especially well is smoke. Drop a smart bomb on a building and it will not only explode in thousands of pieces, but it will send convincing pillars of black smoke skyward. After a heavy battle, the sky will turn black because theres so much smoke in the air. Thats the incredible level of detail in this game.
As good as the single-player campaign is, though, it pales in comparison to the multiplayer game, which is fast-paced and wonderfully balanced. Imagine the first-person multiplayer action game Battlefield 2 reborn as a real-time strategy game, and you have an inkling of how World in Conflict unfolds online. This is an insanely fun multiplayer game that lets you be part of a team of eight as you attempt to destroy the enemy using teamwork and every tactical weapon in the book.
Everything about multiplayer is designed to get you in a game quickly and keep you there for hours on end. First, when you join a server theres no wait for the current game to wrap up before you can get into the fight. If theres a spot open on the server, youre deposited into the middle of the current battle when you join. Second, theres no downtime at all. In most RTS games, you spend the first several minutes hurriedly trying to gather resources and build a base and units. In World in Conflict, you order up your first set of troops and watch them parachute or airdrop in seconds later. Fighting unfolds within the first minute of each game, and it doesnt stop until the very end. Third, thanks to the resource system, if your units are wiped out you can order up some more and be back fighting within seconds.
Team coordination can be handled through a built-in menu system or, even better, the built-in voice-over-IP chat system that lets you communicate vocally with your teammates. All you need is a microphone. Playing in a relatively uncoordinated manner is still a blast, but if you play on a good team against another coordinated team, the gameplay elevates to a whole new level. Victory can be snatched from the jaws of defeat (or vice versa) in intense matches where both teams are hurling all on the battlefield, from air strikes, artillery, multiple tactical nukes, and more. Theres nothing quite more urgent than a team desperately trying to cobble together enough tactical aid points for a last-ditch nuke.
Developer Massive Entertainment has been making real-time strategy games for almost a decade now, but World in Conflict is undoubtedly the studios masterwork. Everything about this game is top-notch, from the addicting gameplay to the amazing visuals. More importantly, World in Conflict offers up a refreshingly new approach to strategy gaming. So if youre a strategy fan, you should definitely try World in Conflict. And even if youre turned off by standard real-time strategy games, you owe it to yourself to try out what Massive has come up with in this exquisite package.
